SASH History
The Edinburgh and Lothian Souters Society Sash
In 1900 the ELSS started the tradition of providing a scarlet sash emblazoned with the Burgh Arms in blue, and the Standard Bearers name embroidered on it. The Royal Burgh Standard Bearer is presented with the sash by the Lady Provost at the Victoria Hall on the Common Riding morning when he also takes charge of the Royal Burgh Flag.
The ELSS still provides the Sash more than a 100 years later and will provide a new sash every time one is required.
The Sash was first presented in 1900 with new sashes being presented in 1930, 1961, 1980, 1998 and 2016.
The Sash was to identify the royal burgh standard bearer from the other riders on the common riding day.
The Lady Provost ensashes the Royal Burgh Standard bearer with the ELSS sash at his installation on the Common Riding Day on the balcony of the Victoria Halls.
The RBSBs wear the Sash on the Common Riding Day and have done since 1900. The Sash is not worn at any other occasion.
Over the Years
Follow the story of the Sash across time.

1900
Prior to the Common Riding, the Selkirk Provost James Russell received a letter from Robert Sword President of the Edinburgh Souters and Lothian Souters Society saying:
Dear Sir
We souters in Edinburgh, wishing that the Royal Burgh be not behind their neighbours at its annual celebration, and thinking that the Standard Bearer should have some distinctive mark from other riders, 'providing a sash to be worn by the Standard Bearer annually’.
By the Standard Bearer annually. The Colour of the sash is scarlet with the Burgh Arms in Blue and the intention is that Standard Bearers’’ names be sewn on it every year thereby bringing out the Burgh Colours, scarlet and blue. As to the presentation of the sash, the form it should take, we would prefer to leave to hear what you suggest.
